A Birthday Celebration

Today is the birthday of Alli Prince, a fellow author (and my former roommate), so in honor of her birthday, I wanted to take a moment to review her recently published debut book, Copper Lies!

This review will be short and sweet (just like the book) and I won’t include any spoilers, but Copper Lies is a heartfelt coming-of-age story set in a fantastical steampunk world. The story follows Lillian Booker, a young teen dealing with a host of insecurities while trying to do something nice for her adoptive father.

So let’s start with the book’s description:

Copper Lies

If you make something, and then that something accidentally comes alive and destroys your entire town…would it be fair to say that you destroyed the town, or can we just blame it on the thing?

Lillian Booker is dying to experiment on the strange glowing rocks hidden inside her adoptive father’s workshop—but the professor forbid it before he left on his journey. As Lillian learns all she can about the stones without breaking the professor’s rule, she finds herself stuck between two worlds.

Will she live the life of a brilliant inventor or give up on her dreams and become a respectable lady instead? What will make her happy? Most importantly, which will prove to the professor that he didn’t make a mistake when he chose her?

When Lillian secretly builds a mechanical dragon, one mistake leads to another—the strange glowing stones collide with her creation and the dragon roars to life. Lillian must make a choice…lie and keep her dragon a secret or finally face the truth?

Will any of it matter anyway if the town’s already been destroyed?

My Thoughts

I already knew quite a bit about Copper Lies before I read it, since Alli was still my roommate during the time that she was writing this story, but I was still surprised by some parts of the story, and really impressed with how she wove some of the plot’s elements together.

The characters are memorable, the descriptions are vivid, and the themes are deep and meaningful.

Copper Lies does a really great job showcasing what happens when we give into our insecurities and rely on them to help protect us from our fears of rejection.

Who Should Read Copper Lies

This is a great story that will encourage teen girls who are struggling with anxiety, fear of rejection, and other insecurities.

In Copper Lies, Alli Prince shows us that even a foe as fearsome as self doubt can be conquered.

So if you’re looking for a clean, uplifting book for a teen girl, or if you’re just a fan of steampunk fantasy with a historical feel, I suggest that you consider checking this book out for yourself!
