Have you ever stepped outside and been amazed at creation?
Sometimes, I’m blown away by the beauty that God has created for us to enjoy. He created it for himself, but he also created it for us. He loves when we admire it.
There is something in that awe we feel for God’s creation that inspires us. It makes us want to create things of our own. That is the way we were made.
We are creative because God is also creative. We were made in his image. We were made to reflect his goodness.
And to do that, we are called to put to good use the skills and passions he has given us.
Even things you might not necessarily think could be done to God’s glory can be and we are called to do so.
In His Image
So why did God make us creative?
One reason is because God wants us to grow.
The process of creating is not always an easy one, nor one that is always enjoyed. It tests our character, our perseverance, and our thinking.
But these are the things that build us.
The world will try to strip this from us. Everyone wants things so comfortable and easy. I do too. But the best things never come about easily.
Secondly, the things we create allow us to connect with others in a way spoken words sometimes cannot. People have been connecting through art for thousands of years, across thousands of years.
It is one of the things that makes us so deeply human.
Creating things also gives us a sense of accomplishment. Our brains are wired to feel satisfaction when we do something well through hard work.
As Christians, we’re not supposed to be grim and proud of nothing. We are supposed to find joy in what we do. Even if our work isn’t perfect, God desires us to use the gifts he has so freely given.
Do Not Be Afraid…
Creating can sometimes be scary, however, especially when we’re putting it out for all to see. The fear of judgement or ridicule is real and I’ve felt it.
But being creative was never about being perfect.
Perfection is impossible, and I would argue to say, it is sometimes something we don’t want when it comes to art.
Of course, we strive to do our best, but perceived imperfections show that we’re human. And I think that’s just fine.
So don’t be afraid to use your gifts. If you’re too afraid to actually do it, you may miss out on something beautiful. Because no matter how imperfect your art is, it can still touch others’ hearts.
Even if it’s just one person.
Who are we to take God’s gifts and hide them under a basket?
To His Glory
But how do we do these things for God’s glory?
I’ve asked myself this question several times. The Bible says to do all things as unto God. But how am I supposed to draw a picture of some fantasy characters as unto God?
It is a bit of a conundrum, but I believe I’ve stumbled upon the answer.
Doing something to the best of our ability, and in a way that is good, brings glory to Him. Because we are using the gifts He gave us.
I write Christian stories, so it is easier to point my work toward him.
But even just doing simple, day-to-day tasks can be done to God’s glory if we do it well.
Even if it’s a fun hobby that you do. It doesn’t matter. Live and create with joy, despite hardship, despite doubt, despite pain, and despite uncertainty.
Be creative. I believe God finds just as much joy in watching us create as we do in creating.
Before You Go…
What’s the last thing you created? (A poem? A delicious meal? A story? A painting? A pastry?)

So true! I love painting, and my favorite thing to do is sit down to paint for a couple hours and just talk to God. I love trying to put my feelings and God’s beauty on canvas. I hope that it brings glory to Him out in the world someplace too! Thanks for the wonderful article!
My latest project is a huge lion portrait!
